Abstract

The main aim of the paper is to discuss different concepts of the classification of non-dominant diatopic lects. The study treats and compares different definitions proposed both by scholars and local legislative bodies. The author confronts the definitions of Normaldialect and Ausbaudialekt developed by H. Kloss with Duličenko’s concept of literary microlanguages, the notions of contested and collateral languages with different understandings of minority and regional languages, including variants thereof. The text is enriched with numerous examples both from the present and the past of non-dominant diatopic lects of Europe.

Bio Statement (e.g., department and rank)

Vladislav Knoll studied Greek and Latin Philologies, but gained his PhD in Slavic Philology. Currently, he works at the Institute of Slavonic Studies of the Czech Academy of Sciences and teaches the history of East Slavic Languages at the Charles University in Prague. He has authored the following books: Kašubština v jazykovém kontaktu (“Kashubian in Language Contact”) (2012), Církevní slovanština v pozdním středověku (“Church Slavonic in the Late Middle Ages”) (2019), and co-authored Sintaxi contrastiva del català amb les llengües eslaves (“Contrastive syntax of Catalan with Slavic languages”) (2011).
