Abstract

This article focuses on selected Balkan features in the word formation subsystem of the Gorani language. The analysis was performed using the linguistic material taken from two sources: 1. the Goranian (Nashinski) – Albanian Dictionary (Reçnik goranski (nashinski) – allbanski) (Sofia 2007) by Nazif Dokle; 2. the collection of Goranian Folk Songs (Горанске народне песме) compiled by Harun Hasani (Pristina 1987). The study is for reference only. I have limited it to four affixes which are common for all Balkan languages and selected groups of word forms in the Gorani language derived from these: ica, -ar, -xhija/çija, -llëk/llak. To a significant extent, the functions of these affixes overlap within the languages of the Balkan language area. The -ica suffix is used in the quantity or a singulative meaning. The Gorani language is characterized by a clear similarity to other Balkan languages in terms of the functioning and role of the -ar affix, which introduces names of agents. Functional coverage in individual lan- guages can also be seen with regard to formations introduced using genetically Turkish suffixes such as -xhija/çija or llëk/-llak. It seems, however, that a relatively high productivity of models, and thus the alleged common use of such words, brings the Gorani language closer to the Albanian language.Gorani language primarily to create emphatic diminutives, and it may convey the meaning of a small  quantity or a singulative meaning.
