Abstract

The review discusses the monograph Grimmosfera polska. Baśnie ze zbioru Wilhelma i Jakuba Grimmów w polskiej kulturze literackiej (1865–2015) [Polish Grimmosphere: Fairy Tales from the Collection by Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm in Polish Literary Culture (1865–2015)] by Kamila Kowalczyk (2021), who attempts to identify major mechanisms and trends that have been present in Polish fairy tale retellings for 150 years. The crucial concept of ‘grimmosphere,’ defined as the system of all phenomena related to the figures and fairy tale works of Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm, creates room for the extensive discussion of the presence of ‘Grimm fairy tales’ in Polish culture throughout the years. The book focuses on ‘retellings proper,’ which transform the traditional fairy tale model in an innovative and often polemical way, but it also includes translations, films, theater plays, advertisements, video games. and other ways in which fairy tales manifest themselves in culture. As a result, Grimmosfera polska is a valuable guide to the long history of Grimm fairy tales in Poland.
