Abstract

The review paper is devoted to the multi-author monograph Synergia słów i obrazów. Badania ikonotekstu w Polsce [Synergy of Words and Images: Iconotext Research in Poland], edited by Hanna Dymel-Trzebiatowska, Jerzy Szyłak, and Małgorzata Cackowska (2021). It contains studies of Polish literary scholars, philologists, educators, and bibliologists on various aspects of picturebooks, showing a truly unique synergy resulting from the integration of words with images and their interaction. Fifteen research studies explore not only the fundamental issue of defining contemporary picturebooks, which is analysed in a separate, first chapter of the anthology, but also delves into detailed thematic issues showing the iconotext in the educational, ecocritical, translational context, and outlines the study of the relationship between various forms of art in which words and images contaminate. The main purpose of the review article is to analyse the publication within the broader context of the editorial team’s previous achievements in developing a mature iconotext theory in Poland.
