Dimensional approach to dyslexia diagnosis

Marta Anna Korendo

Abstract

The current educational understanding of dyslexia and its diagnosis is incompatible both with current neurobiological knowledge and the needs of people with dyslexia. There are no new diagnostic tools, and the ones still in use date back to the 1970s. Neurobiological knowledge about dyslexia allows us to consider its interplay with the broader context of the neural language network, as well as to note the co-existing problems with time processing and with motor skills. Only a broad understanding of dyslexia and accounting for its interrelations with other phenomena, i.e. a dimensional diagnosis, will bring about an effective, early detection of the problem and a change in the therapeutic approach.
