Abstract

The series of short, fantasy stories for children written by Jana Bauer, translated into Polish in 2015 (Scary Fairy in Wicked Wood) and in 2019 (Scary Fairy and the Wild Winter), has gained recognition and popularity in almost twenty countries. The Polish reviewers’ main concerns were otherness of the main character and social tolerance of diversity. The aim of this article is to analyse both books in the context of folklore, folktales, Bildungsroman convention, otherness and concepts of girlhood in the children’s literature. The subversive main character is a multi-faceted dialogue with the literary tradition. Her acculturation to a new society, as a part of initiation journey, is the main topic of both books.

Bio Statement:

Marta Cmiel-Bażant, received her PhD in 2017 based on the dissertation Słoweńska krytyka literacka w okresie międzywojennym (1918–1941) (Slovenian literary criticism in the interwar period (1918–1941)) – supervisor: prof. Zdzisław Darasz. Since 2011, she has been teaching subjects in the field of Slovenian literature, art and culture as well as intercultural relations at the Institute of Western and Southern Slavic Studies, University of Warsaw. She is the author of some subordinate entries in the field of Slovenian studies, published in the 10th volume of the Leksykonu idei wędrownych na słowiańskich Bałkanach, XVIII-XXI wiek (The Lexicon of Migrating Ideas in the Slavic Balkans (18th–21st Centuries)), and a co-editor of the volume Od makrostruktur do mikrohistorii. Instytucje po 1989 roku na Bałkanach oraz w Europie Środkowej i Wschodniej (From Macrostructures to Microhistories: Institutions after 1989 in the Balkans and in Central and Eastern Europe).
