Abstract

Polish-Sorbian cultural ties, not unlike Polish-Slavic relations in general could develop in optimal conditions following the founding of the Slavic Club, an association started in 1901 by Cracow’s academics and intelligentsia and led by art historian Marian Sokołowski and philosopher Marian Zdziechowski. The club’s press organ was “Świat Słowiański” (“The Slavic World”), published in the years 1905‒1914. This monthly paper, edited by Feliks Koneczny, historian and historiosopher, gathered a team of academics and journalists to organize a Slavophile movement alternative to the imperial Russian Pan-Slavism. The magazine’s main focus was on social and political matters; however, its editor-in-chief devoted ample space to artistic output, which was part of a mission in national and political emancipation of Slavic ethnic communities. Lusatian matters, particularly nation-building activities initiated by the Sorbian intelligentsia, were presented to the readers of “The Slavic World” by the Slavist Roman Zawiliński, and three young scholars: Henryk Ułaszyn – linguist, promoter of Jakub Bart-Ćišinski’s poetry among the Poles, historian Tadeusz Kupczyński, and Czesław Koneczny, lawyer.

Bio Statement:

Zdzisław Darasz, retired professor of the University of Warsaw, graduated in Slavic Philology and Oriental Philology from the Jagiellonian University. During his academic career, he held research and teaching positions at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, the University of Silesia, the University of Warsaw, and the University of Łódź. He received his PhD in the humanities from the Jagiellonian University and his habilitation degree from the University of Silesia. His research focuses on the history of the literature and culture of the South Slavs, particularly the Slovenes, Serbs, and Croats, as well as on inter-Slavic cultural relations.
