Abstract

Its magnificent appearance and the multiple ideological connotations made the Temple of Saint Sava an arena where various public ceremonies are organized – not only those of purely religious nature, but also political and ideological performances. One of the most important events of this kind was the Vladimir Putin’s visit to Belgrade on January 17, 2019. During the one-day stay in Serbia, the Russian leader met with President Alexander Vučić and his associates. This article is an attempt to analyze the ideological and symbolic message of the political spectacle planned with precision and great care for legibility, and thus taking the form of a performative implementation of the existing ideas ruling the way in which a political event (surrounded by a religious-like aura) should present itself.

Aleksandra Feder, Slavic and Serbian scholar, PhD student at the Doctoral School of Humanities of the University of Warsaw in the discipline of culture and religion, associated with the Institute of Western and Southern Slavic Studies of the University of Warsaw. Her main research interests include: the issue of the impact of religion on building national identity in the countries of the former Yugoslavia, issues of political and cultural aspects of the functioning of Orthodox Churches in this area, as well as problems of aesthetics and cultural, social and political conditions of turbo-folk.
