Abstract

The article presents the results of a photographic study on the Vlach custom of chain dances researched in Bulgaria. Fieldwork for the study was conducted over a 10-year period (2004–2014) with the participation of students of the Krastyo Sarafov National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts. The visual materials archive, in part accompanying the present article (8 photographs), allows for a comparative study of the phenomena as observed through the years along with the landscape of changes, to be drawn. Regardless of the noticeable and registered degradation in the ritual, the author is strongly convinced that Vlach mourning dances remain very much alive as a tradition which has undergone a particular kind of transformation.

Krasimir Andonov is Associate Professor at the Krastyo Sarafov National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts in Sofia, where he serves as Head of the Photography programme. He is an active cinematographer and photographer. He has worked as director of photography on five feature films and dozens of documentary films, many of which address contemporary issues affecting minority communities in Bulgaria.
