Abstract

The Bulgarian-speaking Muslims in the Southern Rhodopes, commonly known as “Pomaks”, have been the focus of scientific interest of anthropologists, ethnologists, and sociologists in the recent decades. Various problems have been at the center of discussion, primarily those of identity, traditional culture, and folklore. The linguistic studies still keep lagging somewhat behind this anthropological and sociological research. The main aim of this article is to describe and summarize the existing linguistic studies on the “Pomak” varieties in Greece, paying attention to the particular linguistic features and providing commentary.
