Abstract

The article conducts a preliminary analysis of the situation of the Bulgarian heritage language in Poland and describes the strategies and practices used by people of Bulgarian origin to pass on their heritage language to the next generation. It presents the profile and language practices of Bulgarian immigrants in Poland through the years, addresses the terms of heritage language as well as natural and cognitive bilingualism, discusses different strategies for bilingual upbringing and factors that support the acquisition of a second native language. The results of the analysis highlight the need to raise awareness among parents of immigrant origin as for the most effective strategies, such as the one person – one language strategy, attending forms of supplementary education of the heritage language, maintaining contact with its country, culture, and native speakers, etc.
