Abstract

The paper examines the relation of Burgenland Croatian, a standardized language spoken by the Croatian minority in Austria and neighboring countries, to the all-national Croatian standard language, as well as its symbolic significance in solving the issues that have troubled Croatian linguists in regards to the Neo-Shtokavian norm. Burgenland Croatian has been defined either as one of Chakavian variations of the Croatian language or as a parallel Croatian standard, but in fact, Burgenland grammarians’ attempts to bring their language closer to the all-national norm have made it into something of a language norm within a norm. On the other hand, its existence as a Chakavian-based standard may offer solutions for the issues of the Croatian language norm that the majority of Croatian linguists view as negative: its identification with other Serbo-Croatian languages and its disconnection from non-Shtokavian dialects.
