Abstract

Contemporary Slavic Paganism in Poland (Rodzimowierstwo, ‘Native Faith’) is a minority movement which nevertheless is characterized by internal richness and dynamism. In fact, Rodzimowierstwo is a battleground of identity, where divergent and evolving understandings of Native Faith intersect and conflict. Particularly noteworthy are the discursive acts of denying some practitioners the right to call their practices Rodzimowierstwo, which logically imply a kind of similarity that requires negation. In analyzing the logic of purication, my aim is not to point out the characteristics of “pure” Rodzimowierstwo or to present it as a homogeneous phenomenon. Instead, I will try to prove that the internal diversity of Rodzimowierstwo is directly orchestrated by the political spectrum (primarily the left-right opposition), and that participation in the struggle for Rodzimowierstwo’s identity denes the movement’s social boundaries.
