Abstract

The article examines the issue of spiritual independence in the context of the formation of the first dissident club in “socialist” Bulgaria – the Public Committee for Environmental Protection of the City of Ruse. Various interpretations of the influence of the so-called Ruse Committee on the emergence of a democratic civil society in Bulgaria are analyzed. A minority of about 400 intellectuals, artists, writers, etc., harbingers of the social changes that occurred a year and a half after its establishment (March 8th, 1988), demonstrated their aspiration for independence from the party ideology. The analysis is based on archival materials, research literature, as well as on authentic personal impressions of the author’s membership in the committee.
