Abstract

The subject of the present study is the phenomenon of popular conversion towards religious beliefs of the tribes that make up the Bulgarian ethnos – i.e., proto-Bulgarians and Slavs. A preliminary sketch of a comparative analysis was conducted between Christianity and its alternative in the form of the proto-Bulgarian religion (Tangrism) and to a lesser extent, Slavic paganism, presenting the reasons for their opposition to Christianity – rejection of Christian values of universalism, democracy, and egalitarianism, in support of racialized logic, the strengthening of national self-esteem, a rmation of national elites, fostering combative virtues, etc. The article discusses how expectations of a spiritual  revival and even improvement of Bulgaria’s geopolitical situation are attributed to the revival of  ancient religions, quoting a variety of recent online sources.
