Abstract

Much has been written about the non-literary variety of the Czech language (obecná čeština), both in Polish and Czech, and in other languages. The disputes concern its definition, its position in the model of stratification of the national Czech language, its functions in the Czech language, its territorial scope, and
its features. In Poland, translation issues (e.g. Balowska 2006) and glottodidactics (e.g. Ptak, Gwóźdź–Szewczanko 2019) are also discussed. The aim of the article is to present the most recent problems relating to the perception of the mentioned non-literary variety, especially the discussions taking place in the 21st century, the ways in which the variety is defined in research publications, and its place in the latest grammar studies and dictionaries.
