The paper is an attempt to shed light on the status of the Bulgarian language within the Bulgarian community which was officially recognized as a national minority in Yugoslavia following the end of the World War II. The period discussed proved decisive for the recognition of the local Bulgarian community, as a result of which its language was preserved as the basic educational medium after the war. Partly due to the specific geopolitical situation, the Bulgarian language failed to be instituted as the language of school education in Serbia. However, evidence related to the examined period testifies to the emergence of other additional reasons for this outcome. The fact that the problem has been partially elaborated on in scientific literature provides an additional incentive for collecting, systematizing, and developing an initial analysis of the data in a diachronic aspect.
