Abstract

The text takes the form of a historical-biographical essay. It is devoted to the Slovenian painter Ante Trstenjak and his connections with Lusatia. The author presents Trstenjak’s artistic career and his fascination with Lusatian culture, which resulted in numerous portraits of Lusatians, depictions of traditional folk costumes, and landscapes of the region. Particular attention is paid to the documentary value of these works and to the artist’s role in preserving Lusatian cultural identity.

Zdzisław Kłos, Slavist, Sorabist and promoter of Lusatian culture, affiliated with the Institute of Western and Southern Slavic Studies at the University of Warsaw. He has been associated with the journal Zeszyty Łużyckie for many years and served as its Editor-in-Chief in 2019. He is the author of numerous publications on the history and culture of the Sorbs, including the book Spojrzenie na kulturę Serbołużyczan (An insight into Sorbian culture) (2013). His research interests focus on the culture, history and contemporary realities of Lusatia, as well as Polish–Sorbian relations.
