Chiny ‘China’, Chińczycy ‘Chinese people,’ and chińszczyzna ‘Chinese cuisine/stuff ’ in Polish language and culture: An overview

Elżbieta Sękowska

Abstract

The article seeks to outline how the image of China and the Chinese nation has taken shape in the Polish consciousness. This process unfolded alongside the influx of elements of Chinese culture – both material and spiritual – into the Polish cultural sphere. The source material consists of an analysis of diaries and press content, supplemented with references to research on stereotypes and on the use of names belonging to the thematic group Chiny, chiński, etc. The linguistic section reports the results of a lexicographic query concerning the Polish words Chiny ‘China,’ Chińczyk ‘Chinese,’ chińszczyzna ‘Chinese cuisine/stuff ,’ and chiński ‘Chinese-ADJ.’ These lexemes, along with their collocations, appear in both literal and figurative meanings, which indicates their assimilation into the Polish language.
