Neosędziowie and neo-KRS. Meaning, function, and expressive value of new Polish compound words with the particle neo-

Przemysław Megger

Abstract

The article aims to describe the meaning, functions, and expressive value of new compound words with the initial segment neo- occurring in contemporary Polish, e.g., neosędzia, neo-KRS, neoprezes, neozarząd. To this end, a corpus analysis was carried out using data extracted from Monco Frazeo and a contextual analysis of examples from the Internet. A questionnaire was also conducted to investigate the expressive value of the words in question. The analysis shows that the meaning of the particle neo- in combination with some words has expanded. Apart from the semantic component denoting the novelty of what is referred to in the second segment, the neo-element also introduces information that the designate thus named is deemed fallacious, false, or politicised. At the same time, regardless of the context, it expresses the speaker’s negative attitude to what is being referred to.
