The paradigm of the pronouns quis/qui in the “Russian Donatus”

Irina Podtergera

Abstract

This article focuses on the history of the grammatical term pronomen relativum. This question is addressed in the light of the treatment of the inflectional paradigm quis/qui in the so-called “Russian Donatus”, which was translated from Latin by Dimitrii Gerasimov in the late 15th century. The Russian translation from Latin came into being in a German-speaking milieu and was influenced by German grammatical terminology. The analysis of the history of the terminological expression pronomen relativum draws on a broader context of the tradition of Latin and Greek as well as West and East Slavic grammaticography from the time. This enables us to show how the concept of the ‘pronoun’ was understood in the pre-modern linguistic theory of the Latin West and how this concept was received in the (East) Slavic sprachraum.
