Walenty Skorochód Majewski and his struggles with Sanskrit grammatical terms

Monika Nowakowska

Abstract

The article brings some observations arisen from my participation in the project of building the Historical Dictionary of Grammatical Terms (HDGT) online, for which I excerpted grammatical terms from two publications by Walenty Skorochód Majewski (1764-1835) which are the first two Polish descriptions of the Sanskrit grammar. The linguistic corpus and structure built within HDGT granted me an opportunity to obtain a larger picture of the grammatical terminology current at the time, while my deepened research into the sources of Majewski in other European languages, and the query among the documents and publications in Polish concerning his life and research activities allowed me to put a new light on them, and to rectify some incorrect information on the subject. In my analysis of the excerpted material I focused on a number of issues representative of the Sanskrit grammatical tradition, and on the spreading acquaintance with the latter in Europe in the first decades of the 19th century, showing the development of the European linguistic and comparative knowledge attested in Majewski’s works.
