Madman, psychopath, nut job. Media representations of people with mental disorders based on Polish daily press

Łukasz Krawczyński

Abstract

The article presents the results of an analysis of the representations of people with mental disorders in the media, based on texts from the Polish national daily press. The analysis has shown that people with mental disorders are mostly portrayed in a negative context: either as overly emotional (beasts) or as people guided by pure reason (machines). Differences were also found in the description of psychopaths (charismatic, friendly) and madmen (dark, withdrawn, scary).
