Youth language: A glottodidactic perspective

Marcin Mariusz Maciołek , Małgorzata Smereczniak

Abstract

As stated in the title, the article is devoted to the sociolect of youth, examined in the context of teaching Polish as a foreign, second, and heritage language. In response to the rapidly increasing number of foreign students in Poland’s schools and universities, the authors investigated to what extent the indicated variety of Polish language is present in course books intended for this group of learners. The authors discuss the significant features of youth language with references to current research findings. They stress the challenges involved in incorporating such content into glottodidactic practice. Nevertheless, they deem it necessary due to the socialising function of youth slang and its significance in shaping young people’s identities.
