Historia i doświadczanie w „Wiernej rzece” Stefana Żeromskiego

Michał Czernow

Abstrakt

The analysis of Stefan Żeromski’s Faithful River focuses on the presentation of a historical event from a feminine perspective. We can see how the ongoing January Uprising changes the main character’s everyday reality and how it modifies the context of the social order and revealsits hidden rule sand limitations. At the same time, it creates situations that foster awareness and that lead to deeper questions of identity and place in the world. During this process of strengthening Salomea’s individuality experiences a growing pressure of the society and culture. The increasing conflict discloses hitherto transparent entanglements of gender and class. Her life is presented in the centre of historical events and is directly related to them. The boundaries of the public sphere and personal space become unclear, and what seemed to be most intimate turns out to be strongly influenced by History.
