Abstract

The article presents a multimodal analysis of the animated film Encanto (2021), focusing on the portrayal of family dysfunction. As shown in the literature review, this type of approach remains relatively rare in academic research. The analysis centres on phenomena such as communication breakdown, parentification, blurred family roles, and intergenerational trauma. An examination of visual, auditory, spatial, and narrative modes demonstrates that these elements are conveyed through clear metaphors, including the symbol of a cracking house, the interplay of light and shadow, and a plot structure organised around the protagonist’s journey. The film depicts complex dysfunctional mechanisms in a manner that is accessible to younger audiences and thought-provoking for adults, thereby revealing its educational and therapeutic potential. This article may serve as a starting point for further research on the use of animation as a tool for exploring and understanding family dynamics.
