Abstract

This article offers a historical-literary analysis of a motif selected by the author that appears in Polish picturebooks of the interwar period: anthropomorphised dolls. Drawing upon current research and contemporary academic terminology, the author discusses the general evolution of Polish children’s literature from 1918 to 1939 and outlines its most significant developments. The article then proposes a classification of the functions performed by these toys in literature and, from this perspective, analyses selected works identified during archival research Nineczka, bajka o laleczce [Nineczka, a Doll’s Story] (1925) and Przygody laleczki [The Doll’s Adventures] (1925) by Anna Gramatyka-Ostrowska, Zabawa lalek [The Dolls’ Play] (n.d.) by Maria Wilczyńska with illustrations by Józef Zięba, and Dzieci i lalki [Children and Dolls] (1927) by Barbara Stefania Kossuthówna with illustrations by Rie Cramer.
