Abstract

Documenting the memories of seniors is a key element of many ethnographic research projects. Recollections of childhood toys and joys often emerge as natural and seemingly obvious topics of conversation. However, when collecting information from individuals over the age of 65, researchers encounter difficulties related to memory processes, the specificity of the research subject, and methodological issues. Drawing on relevant literature and the findings of research conducted between 2020 and 2023, the author discusses the challenges of interviewing seniors from Cieszyn Silesia about childhood toys, games, and play, as well as the validity of posing a range of questions — including those that may steer the conversation toward other types of memories. The author also presents a sample of responses gathered in this way and engages in a discussion about the potential for modifying the research approach.
