Abstract

Nowadays, mental problems are no longer a taboo. Consequently, they are appearing more often as themes in TV series aimed at younger viewers. The author of this article addresses the issue of young people’s self-aggression, presenting examples of self-harming teenagers from selected young adult TV series: 13 Reasons Why by Brian Yorkey (2017–2020), Sex Education by Laurie Nunn (2019–2023), and Ginny and Georgia by Sarah Lampert (2021–Present). Based on these examples, self-aggressive behaviours are analysed as overlooked or marginalised cultural problems. The selection of the series distributed by one of the main streaming platforms – Netflix – is also intended to underscore the importance of popular culture in highlighting issues that can help teenage viewers in their transition to adulthood.
