„Warsaw Rich in News”? Life in the Capital City in the Correspondence of the Social Elites of the Saxon Era

Bożena Popiołek

Abstract

In the 18th century in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the need for current information about political events was mainly satisfied by correspondence, which, like the handwritten media or the few printed newspapers, was based largely on hearsay and presumed news, i.e. gossip and hearsay. The main centers of creation of various news were most often associated with important centers of political, economic and commercial life of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. A place that has always aroused strong public interest was the royal court, its residences, the people associated with it, their entertainments and the competition for courtly honors. The arrival of the king and his court in Warsaw was eagerly awaited, and the events in the capital were widely commented on.
